Water Polo Falls to Iona, 10-9
10/11/2009 12:00:00 AM | Men's Water Polo
Boston, MA- The Brown men's water polo team (9-6) had a
7-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Iona's 5-2 run
was too much for the Bears to handle falling to Iona 10-9, and
suffering its first regular season Northern Division loss in two
years. Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) led Brown's
offense with three goals, while senior goalkeeper Kent Holland
(Orinda, CA) tallied five saves in net.
“We had a five-goal lead and Iona came back and took the game
from us,” said Head Coach Felix Mercado. “I give Iona
all the credit in the world not to fold in that situation. I hope
my team learned something today.”
The Bears scored the only goal in the first eight minutes of play,
and held onto a 4-2 advantage at the half. Brown then scored the
first three goals of the third quarter to extend its lead to 7-2,
but the Gaels went on a 3-0 run of their own to cut Bruno's
lead to two. Iona then went on to score the next two goals to tie
the game up at 7-7 early in the fourth.
Both teams traded goals in the final eight minutes, but Iona scored
the game-winning goal with just four seconds left on a penalty
shot. Stefanovic led the squad with three goals this afternoon,
followed by Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) and Ryan Gladych (Corona Del
Mar, CA) with two apiece. Dean Serure (Coral Gables, FL) and Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA) chipped in with one goal each, as
Holland led the defense with five saves in the cage.
