A two-time All-American and a finalist for college hockey’s highest honor, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, Yann Danis ’04 is widely considered to be Brown’s finest goaltender. Danis put together a staggering list of statistical averages, eclipsing not only Ivy League and regional marks, but also on the national landscape.
Danis played in 12 contests during his rookie campaign and was named the co-recipient of Brown’s Kevin R. Pope Memorial Trophy as the Rookie of the Year. Danis returned to the ice for a breakout sophomore season in 2001-02, posting a 1.86 goals-against-average and a .938 save percentage in 24 games played. He was named First Team All-Ivy, Second Team All-ECAC and a Second Team All-American. He also earned three straight Brown Class of 1936 Trophy Awards as the team’s Most Valuable Player.
After setting season highs in both games (34) and saves (1,043) as a junior, Danis wrapped up a stellar career with a standout senior campaign in 2003-04, leading the Bears to an Ivy League Championship. He won 15 games for the second straight season and set school records in goals-against-average (1.81) and save percentage (.942). Danis was named a top three finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, highlighting a lengthy list of post-season accolades, including Ivy League and ECAC Player of the Year, ECAC Goaltender of the Year, First Team All-American and First Team All-ECAC.
Danis also excelled in the classroom, as he was named a three-time All-America Academic selection during his career, including a pair of First Team accolades. Danis holds the school record for career shutouts (13), goals-against-average (2.20) and save percentage (.930).
After graduation, Danis signed a professional contract with the Montreal Canadiens, and has since played in 55 NHL games with four teams, posting a 2.79 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage and three shutouts. Danis was named to the 2000-09 ECAC All-Decade First Team and was also selected as one of the All-Time Top 50 Players in ECAC Hockey history as part of the conference’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2010.
