These are times when even a two-sport athlete is considered worth remarking, a circumstance which makes Stephanie Sanders Sullivan’s athletic career at Brown particularly outstanding. Sullivan played soccer and lacrosse for all four of her years at the University, and in addition, kept herself busy in the winter by playing basketball her freshman year and ice hockey during the three subsequent years. Not only that, but Sullivan excelled in all three of the sports she devoted herself to: She made All-Ivy teams in soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse. Sullivan began her soccer career as a goalie and made first-team All-Ivy at that spot as a sophomore. She spent the last two seasons as a fullback. In lacrosse she played in goal for her last three years at Brown, and compiled impressive statistics, setting records for fewest goals allowed (game), and most saves (season), and most saves (career). She was on the second All-Ivy team in 1980 and the All-New England squad in 1978. She considers being asked to play in the national lacrosse tournament on the second All-New England lacrosse team a highlight of her playing days. Her University honors included the Most Team Spirit award for soccer (1978, 1979), the Panda Cup in 1980 for her ice hockey contributions, the Marjorie Smith Award in 1980, and the Francis Driscoll Premium (Classics Department) for leadership on the playing fields and in the classroom (1980). After graduation she played club soccer, both indoor and outdoor, and club ice hockey before joining the foreign service. She is now serving her country as Vice Consul in Douala, Cameroon, Africa, where she lives with her husband, John.
