Brown Basketball Fans flocked to the Pizzitola Center on February 4, 2011 to catch the Bears in action against Columbia and to witness budding first-year star, Sean McGonagill ’14, in action. Upon arrival, they were astonished to observe McGonagill donning a mask to protect his face, a result of a nasty collision with two teammates at practice two days earlier. From practice he had been rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. It took 35 stitches to reattach his upper lip to his gum followed by a trip to a plastic surgeon. Sean was told not to play for four weeks.
Nevertheless, Sean was on the hardwood against Columbia two days later, where he put on a fireworks display, throwing down 39 points (28 in the second half) as part of Brown’s 87-79 triumph. He played the entire 40 minutes while scorching the hoop with 15 of 19 field goal attempts, garnering 4 rebounds and 6 assists. The total of 15 field goals established a Pizzitola Center record for most baskets in a game and the 39 points remains the 6th most in a single game in Brown Basketball history (equaling the freshman mark set by Brown’s all-time leading scorer, Earl Hunt ’03). Sean’s magnificent performance was a titanic “EVER TRUE” effort, one of the most unforgettable athletic feats in the history of Brown University.

But Sean McGonagill ’14 was about as distant from a “one trick pony” as could be imagined. Seamlessly blending a basketball buffet of extraordinary work ethic, complete unselfishness, uncanny instincts, aggressive athleticism, uncommon determination and deep and profound character, he established a multitude of records at Brown. Sean owns the marks for most three-point baskets and assists in a single season. At graduation, he held the records for most three-point field goals in a career as well as minutes played and placed fourth in field goals scored. He finished his career as third all-time scorer, second in assists and fifth with most steals.

Honors and awards for Sean are numerous, including Ivy League Rookie of the Year (2011); Second Team All-Ivy (2012); and twice First Team All-Ivy (2013, 2014). In 2014, he was also selected as Academic All-Ivy, and received the NCAA Senior Class Award (The Nation’s Premier Award for NCAA Men’s Basketball Senior Student Athletes). Sean served as captain for his sophomore, junior and senior years and is the only student athlete in Brown Basketball history to receive the “J. Richmond Fales Award” (Most Valuable Player) in all four years. This distinction honors the member who, “…through sportsmanship, performance and influence, has contributed the most to the sport at Brown”. In 2012, he also received the “Rusty Tyler ‘71 Award”, which is “presented to the member of the team who, through total dedication and loyalty, has given the most of themselves for the good of the team.”

In the words of former Men's Basketball Head Coaching Chair Mike Martin ’04: “In my opinion, Sean rates as one of the best players in program history and one of the best guards in recent Ivy history. I only wish I had the opportunity to coach him for more than the two years I did, but I'm extremely grateful for those two years. He led our team by example every single day with his approach, his drive, and his work ethic. Not only did he never take a day off, Sean never took a play off or a practice drill off. He simply gave all that he had and put his best foot forward every minute during his time at Brown. By doing so, he made everyone around him better.”

Sean is a math teacher at The Governor's Academy in Newbury, Massachusetts where he has also been the head basketball coach for the last four years. After graduation, he spent two years playing basketball professionally in Germany and England before working in sales and marketing for Keenan, a tech startup. He went on to teach at a New York City public school while earning his Master’s Degree in Education at St. John’s University.
