Lloyd Heath Hill '51, a 6-2, 205-pound tackle, had size, speed, agility - and a fierce determination to win. He played on two of Brown's finest teams, Coach Rip Engle's 7-2 and 8-1 clubs of 1948 and 1949, and then captained the 1950 eleven. The All-New England Hill was a starter for the Blue in the annual Blue Gray game in Montgomery, Ala. A bruising tackle whose desire to rough it up on the field belied his soft-spoken appearance off the field, Hill came under the coaching hand of one of the nation's finest line mentors, Gus Zitrides, the man who also developed such brilliant Bruin tackles as Bill McLellan '49, Don Colo '50, and Bucky Walters '50. In the Colgate game of 1948, Hill was having a tough time in the first half, largely due to the aggressive play of the Red Raider left end. In the locker room, Zitrides gave his prize pupil a bawling out and sent him back on the field fighting mad. On the first six plays of that half, Hill and the Colgate end forgot the game and went at each other. After the sixth play, the Red Raider wingman was carried from the field on a stretcher. John Hanlon, columnist for the Providence Bulletin, closely observed Hill at a 1949 practice session, and wrote: "His initial charge is a blast. On offense, he makes his initial block and then roars into the secondary and slams his man to the ground. And when he makes a block, it is for keeps, every time." The graduate of Brockton, (Mass.) High and Wilbraham Academy, signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL but was forced to spend his immediate postgraduate years as a first lieutenant with the Infantry in Korea. Hill earned his master's degree at Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1961, taught and coached in Massachusetts at Canton High and North Quincy High, and then received a law degree three years ago from Suffolk Law School. He's now an attorney in Milton, MA.
