Josh Tobey was on the run the year ‘round during his years at Brown – and that was great news for Bruin athletics. Tobey was Brown’s best cross-country runner of that time, and he also was an outstanding miler during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. In 1949 he set four cross-country records, finished third in the New England Championships, and placed sixth overall (third among the Ivies) at the Heptagonals. In indoor track, Tobey won the New England AAU mile run as a sophomore, placed third in the IC4A miles in a Brown records time of 4:15.00. He also competed on some of the top relay teams with his twin brother Jon ’50 and their brother Joel ’51. In outdoor track, Tobey was equally as good. He won the mile and two mile runs as a junior and a sophomore, respectively, at the New England Championships, placed fourth in the Heps mile as a senior, and fourth in the IC4A mile as a sophomore. He was the outdoor track team’s perennial leading scorer. Tobey, who today is a retail store manager in State College, Pennsylvania, has continued to compete in running events. He was a member of a ten-man, twenty-four-hour mile relay team that set a world record for the over-50 age group. He was the Pennsylvania Masters 800-meter indoor champion in 1985, and the Pennsylvania Seniors mile champion that same year. He recently showed his versatility by completing the Boston, Chicago, and New York marathons. Of his days at Brown, Tobey says fondly, “I completely enjoyed the running experience.”
