James Alfred Moreland ’61, one of Brown’s most outstanding and versatile performers, won the 440-yard hurdles at the 1960 IC4As in :52.6, one tenth of a second off the Olympic qualifying standard. The native of Kearny, NJ, specialized in the 100 and 220-yard dashes and in the 220 low hurdles, although he also competed in the high hurdles and the high jump. Moreland burst upon the Brown track scene with a 15-point performance against Tufts in his sophomore year, taking a first in the high jump and seconds in the 40-yard dash, high hurdles, and low hurdles, in addition to running as anchor man on the winning mile relay team. Jim Moreland had an outstanding junior season. He scored a triple in the 100, 220, and the 220 low hurdles against Dartmouth, Wesleyan, and URI. He scored 17 ½ points in Brown’s victory over undefeated Holy Cross, running the low hurdles in 22.8 and breaking the Brown record of 23.4 set by Bill Dwyer ’48 in 1948. Moreland also was a member of the mile relay team which set a new record in 3:21.6, took firsts in the dashes, a second in the high hurdles, and a third in the high jump. Brown won the New Englands that year with a team total of 40 points, 12 of them contributed by Moreland, who won the low hurdles, took a second in the 100, and a third in the 220. Moreland’s best times were: 100 (9.8), 220 (20.7), 220 lows (22.8), 400-meter hurdles (52.2), 600-yard run (1:11.0). As a senior, Jim Moreland was co-captain with Angelo Sinisi and served as secretary of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He received his law degree from the University of Chicago, a master’s in taxation from Boston University, and is currently practicing law in Winter Park, Fla.
