Cory D. Gibbs
- Induction:
- 2018
- Class:
- 2001
A two-time All-American, Cory Gibbs ’01 attained a decorated playing career on the collegiate, professional and international level, while adding to the storied history of Brown men’s soccer during his time in Providence.
Gibbs was a four-year standout defender for the Bears from 1997 to 2000, and during that time, he guided the team to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including the Elite Eight as a senior. Brown dominated the Ivy League during that span, and as Gibbs anchored the backline, the Bears captured three league titles with a combined record of 22-3-3.
Individually, Gibbs garnered three First Team All-Ivy selections and earned All-American status in 1998 and 2000. He capped his career with a stellar senior campaign in 2000, when he posted five goals and led the team to a perfect 7-0-0 mark in league play, earning Ivy League Player of the League honors. He was also named Academic All-Ivy that season and was the recipient of the Fritz Pollard ’19 Award as Brown’s outstanding male varsity athlete of the year.
Gibbs enjoyed even greater success on the soccer field after graduation with a 12-year playing career on the professional and international level. A fourth-round selection in the 2001 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft by Miami, Gibbs elected to sign abroad with FC St. Pauli of the German Bundesliga, where he played for three seasons.
After two seasons with the Dallas Burn (MLS) and the Dutch club Feyenoord, Gibbs signed with Charlton of the English Premier League and was named to the 2006 U.S. World Cup roster, but he suffered an injury in a match against Morocco early in the summer that sidelined him from the World Cup. Despite the injury, Gibbs earned 19 caps with the U.S. National Team over his career, including three starts in the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup and a 2005 World Cup qualifier victory over Guatemala.
Gibbs finished his professional career with five seasons in the MLS, splitting time between the Colorado Rapids, New England Revolution and Chicago Fire. He put together a career year with the Fire in 2011, starting all 26 games, as he set career highs in goals and minutes played en route to the club’s Defender of the Year honors. Â
