The 1970s was a golden decade for Brown Men’s Soccer, as coach Cliff Stevenson’s teams dominated Ivy League and New England opponents. An 18-game Ivy winning streak, nine consecutive NCAA appearances, and four Ivy League titles give testimony that this period produced the finest all-time teams in Brown’s history. High national rankings and deep runs in the NCAA Tournament were the norm, and three Brown teams advanced to the semifinals. The consensus is that the 1975 team was “the best of the best,” with 12 wins, three losses, and two ties. They posted six shutouts while scoring 57 goals. After suffering consecutive mid-season road losses, they regrouped to run the table in the regular season. Their shared Ivy championship was their third straight first-place finish.
In the NCAA tournament, the Bruins dispatched Bridgeport 3-2, arch-rival Connecticut 2-1 in four overtimes and three penalty kicks, and Ivy co-champion Cornell 3-2. In the heartbreaking semifinal against San Francisco, they fell 2-1 in three overtime periods. This resilient team bounced back to gain third place by beating Howard 2-0.
The 1975 team was a close-knit group that drew huge crowds to Aldrich-Dexter Field. They also made history by playing Brown’s first-night game - against Connecticut. As a tribute to Coach Cliff Stevenson and all the outstanding teams of the decade, the soccer-lacrosse pitch was named Stevenson Field in 1979. The depth of the 1975 team reflected Stevenson’s relentless recruiting and included many of Brown’s all-time greatest individual players. It was, however, the total involvement of every individual in the 1975 season that resulted in this group being inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame.
