- Induction:
- 2016
The storied 1975-76 Brown men’s ice hockey team is arguably one of the finest groups in the long history of the program, and has a lengthy list of accomplishments to prove it, including an Ivy League Championship, Frozen Four berth and the best overall record in program history.
Under the direction of Dick Toomey, the Bruins, as they were called, went 23-7-0 overall during the 1975-76 campaign, highlighted by a 13-game winning streak. Brown finished 20-6-0 in the ECAC and 11-1-0 in the Ivy League, winning 11 straight games to close out the regular season. After a pair of victories over Dartmouth and Cornell, Brown fell to Boston University in the ECAC Championship game at the Boston Garden. The Bruins narrowly lost to Michigan Tech, 7-6, in double overtime of the national semifinal contest at Denver Arena. They then bounced back in the Frozen Four consolation game with an 8-7 win over Boston University. Mike Flanagan and Greg Vezzosi notched back-to-back goals late in the third period to pull off the comeback win over the Terriers.
Individually, Brown was led up front by the duo of Bill Gilligan and Bob McIntosh, the two top scorers in school history with 180 points and 160 points, respectively. Gilligan earned All-American honors during the season while setting single-season program records for points (79) and assists (54). McIntosh led the way with 27 goals to go along with 39 assists for 66 points. As a team, the Bruins notched 186 goals, averaging just over six goals per contest. The 1975-76 team was a very tight-knit band of brothers. They have enjoyed frequent reunions, including the fortieth last February.
