PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown University's Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jake Silverman has been named the University of Chicago's Director of Athletics and Recreation, effective July 15, 2026.
"I am thrilled for Jake Silverman and his family as they embark on this well-deserved opportunity," Mencoff Vice President for Athletics and Recreation M. Grace Calhoun said. "Jake has been instrumental in everything we have achieved at Brown over the last five years, and the University of Chicago is getting an outstanding leader for their next chapter."
Silverman joined Brown in April 2021 as the Deputy Director of Athletics and was promoted to Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Recreation in the summer of 2024. He oversees all intercollegiate and performance programs at Brown and serves on the University's Executive Committee and the Ivy League's Senior Leadership group. Beginning in Fall 2025 he was also appointed to the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse oversight committee.
Silverman's portfolio at Brown focuses on intercollegiate athletics and all aspects of the student-athlete experience, including wellness and performance, student-athlete development, and recruiting and retention. He also serves as the sport supervisor for eight of Brown's programs, including men's basketball, football, men's hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, women's soccer and men's and women's golf. Silverman leads the sport supervisors group, ensuring consistent management and best practices for effective oversight of varsity programs.
Silverman becomes the fifth administrator to become a Director of Athletics under Calhoun's leadership, joining Pat Kraft (Penn State), Alanna Wren (Penn), Sherryta Freeman (Lafayette), and Marvin Lewis (George Mason).
"I am honored and energized to undertake this opportunity to lead the future of University of Chicago Athletics and Recreation," Silverman said. "I'd like to thank Grace Calhoun for her leadership and mentorship. I'm proud of the transformation that we have built in Brown Athletics and Recreation over the past five years. It has been a privilege to build alongside so many talented coaches and staff in service of Brown's remarkable student-athletes. I'm looking forward to following the future successes of the Brown Bears."
