Women's Hockey Grinds Out 2-1 Win Over Harvard for Weekend Sweep
10/28/2023 8:04:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – India McDadi tallied the game-winning goal with 5:40 remaining in the third period to lift the Brown Bears (3-3-0, 2-2-0 ECAC) to a 2-1 win over the Harvard Crimson (0-5-0, 0-5-0 ECAC) Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
With the win, Brown completes the weekend sweep over Dartmouth and Harvard to improve to .500 overall and in conference play.
"A complete sweep of the weekend is huge for us," said head coach Melanie Ruzzi. "I told the players that yesterday was over and today was a new day and we had to start fresh at 0-0 and get after it. I think we didn't play our greatest in the first period but we started to turn it on the second. I think it's good for us is to have a super tight game – we're down by one, we have to get a goal back – and we had a really nice power play goal.
"I think we were more mature in the game, we played a complete game and we understood the defensive side. We hadn't had success closing out games against Holy Cross, so this weekend we closed it out which is great."
Brown and Harvard played a scoreless opening period with Brown goaltender Kaley Doyle (19 saves) making seven stops in the frame. Harvard goaltender Alex Pellicci (23 saves) made six saves in the opening period.
The Crimson took the lead early in the second period as Gabi Davidson Adams broke through the defense to beat Doyle on a breakaway with assists credited to Kayley Crawford and Kaley MacDonald.
Anna Shelden evened the score at 8:09 of the middle period. She re-directed a point shot from Ellie Gauvin on the power play to beat Pellicci. Elodie Roy found Gauvin across the top of the zone to set up the scoring play.
McDadi burst into the Crimson zone and wired a shot past Pellicci and into the top of the net for the winner. Sam Broz hit McDadi with a quick pass from the boards after picking up an initial pass from Cameron Sikich.
Brown went on another power play late in the third which limited Harvard's efforts to tie the game. Pellicci was pulled for the extra attacker with less than a minute remaining but the Crimson were unable to get a shot on goal.
Brown hits the road next weekend to take on a pair of conference foes, beginning with the third-ranked Colgate Raiders (7-1-0, 2-0-0 ECAC) on Friday (Nov. 3) before taking on the ninth-ranked Cornell Big Red (6-0-1, 2-0-0 ECAC) on Saturday (Nov. 4). Both games will stream on ESPN+.
