Brown Set to Kick off 2021 Season with Governor’s Cup Matchup vs. URI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a layoff of 665 days, Brown Football will return to action and kick off the much anticipated 2021 season on Saturday afternoon. The Bears will host in-state rival Rhode Island in the 105th Governor's Cup at Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. on ESPN+ and AM 790 WPRV.
CONTACTLESS TICKETING:
The Brown athletics department has moved to contactless ticketing for the 2021-22 season. Fans are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets online at BrownBears.com/tickets prior to their arrival at Stevenson-Pincince Field. For ease of access and convenience, fans should either download their digital tickets to display on their mobile device or print them at home prior to arrival.
HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS:
Per university regulations, all fans attending the game must wear a face covering at all times both indoors and outdoors, unless actively eating or drinking.
OPENING KICKOFF:
• Brown leads the overall series 73-29-2, dating back to 1909.
• The Rams captured the last match-up in 2019 by a score of 31-28 in Providence.
• Brown's last win vs. URI was in 2017 when the Bears scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter on their way to a 24-21 victory.
• The game will be the first contest to be played on new state of the art field turf, which was installed this summer and named in honor of Richard Gouse '68, P'02.

• Brown will be served by two senior captains for the 2021 season in quarterback EJ Perry and running back Allen Smith.
EJ PERRY ACCOLADES
• EJ Perry led the nation in total offense (367.8 yards per game) and set an Ivy League record for total offense (3,678 yards) in 2019 after transferring to Brown from Boston College.
• He earned First Team All-Ivy honors and was a finalist for the Asa Bushnell Cup as the Ivy League Player of the Year.
• Perry led the Bears in passing (2,948 yards) and rushing (730 yards) in 2019 with his 2,948 passing yards ranking fifth all-time at Brown and 15th in Ivy League history.
• In 2020, he was selected as a Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-American.
RETURN OF THE RUSH
• Brown returns its top two rushers from 2019 in EJ Perry and Allen Smith.
• As a team, Brown ranked fourth in the Ivy League in rushing at 153.4 ypg, and second in total offense at 454.5 ypg.
• Smith led the Brown running backs with 550 rushing yards on 118 attempts in 2019, and his eight rushing touchdowns tied for the team lead. He ran for over 100 yards in two games, marking the first two 100-yard rushing games of his career.
• Smith rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns at Columbia and carried for 109 yards and a score vs. Princeton.
• Smith led the Bears in rushing in 2018 with 175 yards on 41 carries.
• The Bears also return senior tailback William Such, the 2017 Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year out of Cranston West.
• Brown welcomes back several upperclassmen on defense who saw significant time as underclassmen in 2019. Senior linebacker Jason Medeiros totaled 47 tackles in 2019, good enough for second on the team. He added two tackles for a loss and a pair of interceptions.
• Junior cornerback Cooper DeVeau was third on the 2019 squad with 46 tackles and added one fumble recovery and 11 pass breakups. Junior safeties Josh Ofili (31 tackles, 6 breakups) and Joseph Shell (25 tackles, 1 INT) also return to help lead the Bears' secondary.
LOOKING FOR HELPING HANDS
• Brown will look to replace its top six receivers from its 2019 squad that ranked second in the Ivy League with 301.1 receiving yards/game.
• Tight end Hayes Sutton is the team's leading receiver with 15 catches for 163 yards in 2019.
• Brown RB Allen Smith is the only member of the Bears roster to have at least one career touchdown reception. He tallied two in 2019 and one in 2018.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND:
• The Rams are off to a 2-0 start for the third time in the past four seasons following a 45-21 win vs. Bryant, and a 16-14 win last weekend at Albany in their CAA opener.
• Rhody played three games in an abbreviated spring 2021 season, with wins over Villanova (40-37) and Albany (17-10), while falling to FCS semifinalist Delaware (35-21).
• URI held Albany to just 215 yards of total offense, including 5-of-17 on third downs.
• Senior tailback Justice Antrum leads the Rams with 90.0 rushing ypg and three TDs.
