Women's nationals will feature as a two-day event in 2021 with 18 teams competing for the Gerald C. Miller Trophy in a single round robin format. The U.S. Naval Academy will host the event with support from Annapolis Yacht Club, Severn Sailing Association, Eastport Yacht Club, and Annapolis Sailing School. Brown qualified for the championship after winning the 2021 New England Women's Championship. The Bears won the 2019 ICSA Women's National Championship – the last time the event was held.
THE FIELD
The 18 teams competing for the ICSA Women's National Championship include: Boston College, Brown University, College of Charleston, George Washington, Georgetown, Hobart & Williams Smith Colleges, Jacksonville University, Old Dominion University, Saint Mary's College, Stanford University, Tufts University, Tulane University, University of California Santa Barbara, University of Rhode Island, University of South Florida, University of Texas, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Naval Academy.
LAST TIME OUT
Brown closed out its final weekend of competition prior to the national championships with a pair of strong performances. On Friday, May 14, the Bears topped Tufts with an undefeated 9-0 record from Bears 1 in their second home regatta of the season. On Saturday, May 15, Brown took the top spot with Bears 1 in a 20-boat fleet race regatta at Roger Williams alongside Tufts.
DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Brown University sailing won the 2019 ICSA Women's National Championship from May 23-24, 2019 – the last time the event was held. After the Bears won the women's national semifinals from May 21-22, the team carried that momentum into the national championship winning by 15 points over second-place Harvard with Yale in third.
IN THE HISTORY BOOKS
Brown has won five ICSA Women's National Championships in program history, coming in 1985, 1988, 1989, 1998, and 2019. Overall, the Bears have finished in the top three at the women's national championships 13 times. That number includes seven runner-up finishes (1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1997, 2008, 2016) and one third-place finish in 2015.
NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONS
As part of an impressive spring in its first season as a varsity program and following a 13-month hiatus from competition, Brown won the New England Women's Championship (Apr. 17) and the New England Coed Championship (Apr. 18) before placing third at the New England Team Race Championship (Apr. 25). Based on those results, the Bears qualified for all three spring college sailing national championships. Brown and Boston College are the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships.
COMING SOON
The ICSA Team Race National Championship is June 2-3, and the ICSA Coed National Championship is June 7-8. Both championships will also take place in Annapolis, Md.
