ATLANTA, Ga. – Junior Eliza Grover tallied a match-high 18 kills, sophomore Kristin Sellers posted a double-double on 40 assists and 10 digs, and Brown University volleyball rallied for a 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-9) win at Georgia State University on Sunday afternoon at GSU Sports Arena.
Â
Playing in their non-conference finale, the Bears (8-2) came back from a 2-1 set deficit to upend the host Panthers (4-7) and finish the Georgia State Tournament with a 1-1 record.
Â
The Bears' 8-2 overall record ties the best start for the team through 10 matches in program history alongside the 2008 team. The Bears' eight non-conference wins ties for the most non-league wins for the team since the Ivy League went to 14 conference games in 2001. Four of Brown's eight wins on the season have come in five sets.
Â
"I'm proud of the way our team stayed composed and found a way to win sets four and five," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "We have had a very nice start to the year, and hopefully we can use that momentum as we enter into a new challenge in Ivy League play."
Â
Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) landed her 18 kills on .417 hitting, committing just three errors on 36 attempts. She added six blocks and four digs and now has four double-figure kill matches on the season.
Â
Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted her third double-double in her last four matches behind her 40 assists and 10 digs. She went over 40 assists for the second time this season.
Â
Junior Gabrielle Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) registered 14 kills and five digs for her sixth match this season with double-figure kills. Senior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) finished with 13 kills and seven digs and has now notched double-figure kills in all 10 of the Bears' matches on the year. Freshman Kaitlyn Wong (Los Altos, Calif.) contributed 14 digs – her fourth straight match with double-digit digs.
Â
Playing in their home state for the first time as collegiate student-athletes this weekend, senior Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) came up with three blocks and now has 299 career blocks, and sophomore Olivia Dukat (Roswell, Ga.) posted four kills on .444 hitting.
The Bears opened the match with a 25-19 win in set one. Brown jumped out to a 12-5 lead and did not allow the Panthers to come any closer than four points over the duration of the frame. Moriconi terminated on four kills on six swings with no errors in the period.
Â
Georgia State knotted the match at one set apiece with a 25-15 win in set two. The Bears remained within three points at 18-15 before the Panthers closed the frame on a 7-0 run.
Â
The two teams battled in set three with Georgia State holding on for a 25-23 set win to pull ahead 2-1 in sets. Trailing 19-15, the Bears rallied to equalize at 22-22. With the score still tied at 23-23, the Panthers took the next two points. Sellers handed out 10 assists in the set.
Â
Brown answered with a 25-21 victory in set four, sending the match to a decisive fifth frame. After GSU pulled within 21-19, the Bears claimed four of the set's final six points to capture the stanza. Grover and Moriconi posted identical lines in the frame – each notching five kills on eight swings with no errors (.625 hitting).
