EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Junior Nino Bastianelli placed second at 197 pounds to lead Brown University wrestling at the Cougar Clash on Saturday at the Vadalabene Center on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Â
Over the course of the day, the Bears totaled a quintet of top-five placers and tallied 13 wins, including five bonus-point wins behind four major decision victories and a technical fall.
Â
"We had some guys put together very positive results against a high level of competition," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "Half of the teams here were power-five schools with Missouri, Wisconsin, and Michigan State, and we were able to take some wins off them. This event was a great way to help us prepare for the dual season."
Â
Alongside the second-place finish for Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) at 197 pounds, senior Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) came in third at 141 pounds, freshman Ricky Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) took fourth at 149 pounds, and senior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) and freshman Darby Diedrich (Howell, N.J.) placed fifth at 125 and 133 pounds respectively.
Â
Bastianelli topped opponents from SIU Edwardsville and Wisconsin in the quarterfinals and semifinals before dropping a decision to Missouri in the first-place match.
Â
Pawelski posted a 3-1 record on the day, besting opponents from Michigan State, Little Rock, and SIU Edwardsville on his way to a bronze finish. Cabanillas notched a 2-2 mark with victories over Michigan State and Wisconsin. Bastianelli, Pawelski, and Cabanillas all reached the semifinals of their weight classes.
Â
Keeley finished 2-2 with wins over Missouri and Michigan State while Diedrich went 2-2 with triumphs over SIU Edwardsville and Wisconsin. Sophomore Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) added a win over SIUE at 174 pounds.
Â
In the team standings, Brown came in fourth with 48.5 points. Missouri (138.5 points), Wisconsin (121.5), and Michigan State (114.5) took the top three spots.
