INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Brown University sophomore Umar Masood opened competition with four wins in men's foil on the first day of the 2017 NCAA Fencing Championships at Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Thursday morning.
Making his debut at the NCAA Championships, Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) went 4-11 in rounds one through three, standing in 22nd place out of 24 competitors in men's foil with a -27 indicator.
A 2017 Second Team All-Ivy honoree, Masood went 1-6 in the first round and nearly picked up two more wins, dropping a pair of 5-4 decisions. He tallied a 2-2 record with a -1 indicator in round two and finished with a 1-3 mark and a -7 indicator in round three.
Masood will conclude competition at the championship tomorrow, Friday, Mar. 24, with rounds four and five beginning at 9 a.m. Semifinal and final bouts are set for 1:30 p.m.
Through day one competition, Brown sits in 19th place out of 20 schools in the team standings.
