PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, N.H.) placed 31st overall to lead the Brown University women's cross country team as the Bears competed at the Paul Short Invitational Saturday on the campus of Lehigh University.
"We had some heat-related issues in the Open Race to start the morning," said head coach Mitchell Baker. "Subsequently, we took a conservative approach in the Varsity Race and, by-and-large, climbed well after the first mile. There are good things to build upon as we head towards the championship season next month."
Caldwell finished 31st overall out of 401 total runners as she completed the 6-kilometer course in time of 21:08. Sophomore Lily Harrington (West Hartford, Conn.) was close behind in 34th-place as she crossed the finish line in a time of 21:15. Leah Eickhoff (Hanover, N.H.) finished 123rd at 22:02, while junior Alexandra Conway (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Lucy Van Kleunen (Philadelphia, Pa.) placed 137th and 145th, respectively, in times of 22:09 and 22:13 to round out the Brown scorers. Sophomore Charlotte Walmsley (Weston, Mass.) finished the course in a time of 22:29, followed by sophomore Sophie Mateu (Simi Valley, Calif.) at 22:45.
"Heidi Caldwell put together a steady race; her comeback from last year's injury is coming along well," said Baker. "Lily Harrington, in her first high-level cross country race, moved aggressively to team up with Heidi in the second half. Lucy Van Kleunen, like Lily in her first cross country season for Brown, shut the door as our final scorer. We're looking forward to bringing together everyone on the squad for the Rothenberg Run at home in two weeks."
The Bears return to action on Friday, Oct. 18 when they host the Rothenberg Run at Goddard State Park.
