Men's and Women's Cross Country to Compete at NCAA Northeast Regional

Madison, C.T.- The Brown University men's and women's cross country teams will visit Hammonasset Beach State Park this Friday, November 9th, to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional meet hosted by Fairfield University. The women's six–kilometer race is slated to start at noon, while the men's 10k race follows at 1:15 pm. The condition of the course was declared acceptable following Hurricane Sandy by both Yale and Fairfield coaches, but conditions may turn out to be waterlogged or sluggish following the snow from this week.

The field is comprised of 39 teams from the Northeast region, including five other Ivy League teams: Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, Harvard and Yale. The top two teams from the region get an automatic bid for the NCAA Championship at Louisville. Thirteen additional teams from the nine total regions are selected for at-large bids for Nationals.

Brown's women enter Friday's meet with a sixth place ranking in the region after coming away from the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships with a tie for third place. Brown and Harvard tied with 93 points just behind Princeton's 91 points, and Cornell captured the Championship title. The Bears, under Coach Mitchell Baker, placed three women in the top seven finishers, all earning first team All-Ivy honors. Junior Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, NH) crossed in fourth place, senior Olivia Mickle (Sacramento, CA) in fifth place, and junior Margaret Connelly (Chicago, IL) in seventh. The Brown women finished in 11th place last year at the Regional meet with a combined 241 points.

The men enter the regional looking to run together as a tighter pack, after not having the performance they sought at the Heptagonal Championships at Princeton two weeks ago. The Bears finished in eighth place with 223 points as senior Conor Grogan (Hudson, MA) led the way with a 32nd place finish with a 24:38.6.

Currently, the Brown men are ranked 12th in the region. Last year, the Bears garnered fifth place at the region under Coach Tim Springfield.
