Madison, WI- Brown's Women's Cross Country Team competed in the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday. The meet was held at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course at the University of Wisconsin, and boasted an impressive field both in terms of the number of teams competing and the caliber of the participating programs. The Bears finished in 26th place overall out of 49 teams. They were just one point behind League rival Princeton University and on the heels of Harvard's team.
"It was an extremely important competition to be in so that our women can get a sense of what the top level of competition is all about, and this really was the top level," said head women's cross country coach Mitchell Baker. "It was a very difficult field to navigate with 49 teams on the course, and good practice for championship meets later in the season where each runner will need to maintain a high level of focus to keep picking off other teams."
Leading the Bears' finishers was Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, NH) who was the 2012 Heps Indoor and Outdoor 5k Champion. Caldwell finished in 20:33 in 57th place across the 6-kilometer course. Olivia Mickle (Sacramento, CA) and Margaret Connelly (Chicago, IL) worked through the race together, finishing respectively in 20:40 (71st place) and in 20:41 (72nd place).
Brown competitors Leah Eickhoff (Hanover, NH) and Bree Shugarts (Lewistown, PA) also teamed up, crossing in 21:28 for 212th place and 21:29 for 215th place. Rounding out the squad were Elaine Kuckertz (Clarendon Hills, IL) and Alexandra Conway (Manchester, NH).
Baker added that, "I thought we performed well but still have plenty of areas that we can work on improving in the next month. We're doing a better job running together, but could still pack up more during the second half of the race."
Brown will host the Rothenberg Run at Goddard Park in Rhode Island next weekend, October 19th as a final competition before the championship meets.
