Smithfield, RI- In the first action of the 2012 season, the Brown women's cross country team raced to fourth place on Bryant University's 5k course. Coach Mitchell Baker used this local spectator-friendly meet as a chance to debut some of the freshman runners and to give several upperclassmen early-season racing experience. Harvard University won the team score with 27 points, followed by Boston College, Quinnipiac University, and Brown with 121 points.
Senior Elaine Kuckertz (Clarendon Hills, IL) was the Bears' top finisher, crossing the line in 18:36.5 in 10th place. Not far behind was freshman Charlotte Walmsley (Weston, MA) who finished in 12th place with a time of 18:42.9. Senior Elizabeth Ryan (Farmington, CT) completed the course in 19:00.9 placing 21st, and freshman Kate Buss (Blacksburg, VA) earned 31st place in 19:07.4.
Freshman Sophie Mateu (Simi Valley, CA) put in a solid first effort, crossing in 49th place with a time of 19:40.1 and was followed by junior Kelsey Albright (North Andover, MA) in 53rd place (19:48.4). Returning to racing after an injury-laden track season, sophomore Abigail Braiman (Horseheads, NY) crossed in 20:03.7 for 64th, and Taylor Williams (Orange, CA) posted a time of 20:37.2 for 89th place.
Junior Lizzie Costa (Rumford, RI) came through in 127th place (21:30.6), and Audrey Davis (Galion, OH) rounded out the group in 22:32.2 (152nd).
The Bears will now prepare for Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University on September 28th.
