Providence, RI- The Brown University men's and women's cross country teams are ready to compete at the 2010 Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. tomorrow. The women's 5k race is set to begin at 11 a.m., followed by the men's five-mile race at 11:45 a.m.
Ranked No. 12 in the Northeast Region, the Brown women return four of their top five runners from last year's Ivy championships where the Bears finished in fifth place overall. Freshman Margaret Connelly and Heidi Caldwell have been racing consistently well this season, and will have their first league championship experience tomorrow.
Connelly has proven to be Brown's top runner for much of the season, competing her most recent 5k in 17:27.1. Sophomore Elaine Kuckertz has shown her ability over the early part of the season as well, as the squad will also look to the leadership of senior veterans Lauren Pischel and Kesley Ramsey, as well as junior Ari Garber.
Also ranked No. 12 in the Northeast Region, the men's squad is currently being led by junior Matt Duffy and seniors Christian Escareno and Brian Schilder. The Bears returned two of their top five from last year's championships, as Escareno led the pack with a second place finish.
Duffy has stepped it up this season and has been a consistent force. He most recently ran a solid 24:48.9 for first place on the 8k course at Brown's Rothenberg Invitational on Oct. 15. Junior Dan Lowry and sophomore Kevin Cooper are also coming on strong for the Bears and are expected to make an impact.
