Bronx, NY- Freshman Margaret Connelly was the top runner and top freshman for the Brown women's cross country team at the Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday afternoon to help the Bears finish just two points out of first.
"I am very happy with the women who raced today," said cross country coach Jill Miller. "They put themselves in a great position at the mile marker and worked very hard through the hills to finish strong. For where our training is right now, I couldn't have asked for more from them."
The Bears ran a very smart race and show great toughness over the 6k course at Van Cortlandt Park. Four of Brown's top five finishers are middle distance runners on the track squad, and showed their strength out on the cross country this afternoon.
After Connelly's third place time of 22:07, Elaine Kuckertz opened her season on a strong note finishing just behind Connelly in fourth place with a time of 22:11. Bree Shugarts earned a 22:38 for 17th and Kesley Ramsey followed right behind with a time of 22:39 for 18th place. Rosie Fleming had a solid day on the course running a 22:49 finishing 22nd overall, as well as Kate Desimone (22:49) and Kate Grimes (23:07).
