Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Gear Up for 2010 Season

Providence, RI- The Brown University men's and women's cross country teams are set for another exciting year as both squads begin competition when a small group travels to Franklin Park on Saturday, Sept. 11 for the Boston College Invitational, followed by a larger group heading to the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Season Outlook Women's Cross Country:

"While we return 11 of our top 12 runners from last year, we have a lot of work to do," said women's cross country coach Jill Miller. "The team is both talented and hard-working, it's now a matter of a training smart and coming together as a group to over-achieve this season," said Miller.

The women's cross country squad is looking to bounce back from its fifth place finish at last year's Ivy League Championships. After losing senior Ariel Wright, the team will be led by senior Captains Lauren Pischel and Caitlin Clark, and bolstered by the return of seniors Kesley Ramsey, Megan Fitzpatrick, and Michaeline Nelson, and juniors Ari Garber and Rachel Baker. The team also expects several freshmen to make an impact and help the team's efforts this season.

"We certainly have the potential to break out this season if we continue the trend of improvement seen between indoor and outdoor track season last year," said Pischel. "The goal is to keep that energy and momentum going."

Season Outlook Men's Cross Country:

Coming off a strong team performance at the 2010 Outdoor HEPS Championships, the Brown University men's team looks to continue to make strides to the top of the Ivy League this fall.

Led by returning NCAA Championships qualifier, Christian Escareno, and Ivy League Outdoor 5k third place finisher and co-captain, Matt Duffy, the men's team looks for yet another strong performance at Van Courtland Park on October 29th.

Joining Escareno and Duffy in the team's efforts will be seniors Brian Schilder, and co-captain Chris Collins. Also look for juniors Anthony Schurz, Tom Elnick, Scott Friedlander, Nathan Chellman and sophomores Austin Snyder, Michael Stumpf, Conor Grogan, and Kevin Cooper to play important roles for Bruno throughout the season.

The Bears are also very excited to have an extremely strong freshmen class joining them in 2010. Watch for freshmen Matthew Bevil (Mary Esther, FL), Jeffrey Bush (Westborough, MA), Colin Savage (Liverpool, NY), Andrew Perilli (Lockport, NY), Brendan Boyle (Mansfield, MA), and Peter Hix (Dayton, OH) to all make great improvements during their freshmen campaign.
