Brown Cross Country Competes at CCSU
New Britain, CT- The Brown University cross country teams
competed at the CCSU Mini Meet this morning at Stanley Quarter
Park. The women’s squad earned second place with 42 points in
the ten-team field, and the men’s team finished in fourth
with 117 points in the 11-team field. While both the men and
women held their top 11 runners at home to gear up for the Ivy
League's Heptagonal Championships this weekend, Head Coach Craig
Lake gave some of her younger runners a chance to gain experience
and compete against a talented field.
Quinnipiac claimed the women’s team title with 32 points,
just 10 points ahead of the Bears. UConn placed third (83) and URI
finished in fourth (128). Brown freshman Bree Shugarts (Lewistown,
PA) led the women with a 10:25.22 time on the course, while junior
Megan Fitzpatrick (Hopewell Valley, NJ) followed right behind with
a 10:25.62.
Earning ninth place was freshman Elaine Kuckertz (Clarendon Hills,
IL) with a 10:35.41, and sophomore Eliza Webber (Stoddard, NH)
recorded a 10th place finish with a 10:37.45. Also turning in a
solid performance was Carolyn Ranti (10:49.28) and Angela Rugino
(10:52.25).
Providence College earned the men’s team title with 33
points, followed by CCSU with 71 and Quinnipiac in 81. Brown
sophomore Scott Friedlander (Deerfield, IL) led the Bears with a
15:25.45 for sixth place on the 5k course. Freshman Ben Stephenson
(Austin, TX) crossed the line at 15:44.07 for 21st place and
sophomore Nathan Chellman (Reno, NV) came in 22nd with a 15:44.72.
Freshman Erik Berg (Seattle, WA) ran a 15:55.00 and sophomore
Anthony Schurz (South Bend, IL) posted a 15:59.77.
