Dec. 10, 2007
Providence, RI - Brown Head Water Polo Coach Felix Mercado has announced the 2008 Brown women's water polo schedule. The Bears are scheduled to play two CWPA Northern Division home games at Wheaton College in addition to two trips to California and games against the strongest competition in the East.
The Bears will begin the regular season against top competition at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, on Feb. 9-10. At last season's Triton Invitational, 12 of the 16 teams present were ranked in the Top 20 nationally. They'll follow that one week later with two games at Marist.
Brown's second test will be at the new Elite 6 Tournament, held at Maryland. The tournament will pit the top two teams from each of the CWPA's three divisions (North, South, and West) against one another in a round-robin format. Brown and Hartwick will represent the North, and will play Princeton and Maryland from the South and Michigan and Indiana from the West. Hartwick, Princeton and Michigan finished last season in the Top 20, with Indiana receiving votes and Brown spending time in the poll earlier in the year.
On March 7, the Bears will begin their CWPA Northern Division schedule at Hartwick, taking on the Hawks, who finished last season ranked #10 in the country. The following day, Brown will play three games, including a Northern Division contest against Utica, a non-league game against Marist, and an exhibition against the New York Athletic Club. A league game at Harvard will follow the next week on March 13.
The Bears' annual Spring Break California trip will come on March 26-30, as they play five games in five days against some of the West's best. Included are games at Stanford, California, and UC-Davis, who finished last year ranked second, eighth, and 11th in the country, respectively. Brown will open at Sonoma State, followed by a game at UC Santa Cruz.
Returning from that trip, Bruno will play a midweek game against Connecticut College before traveling to Princeton for games with CWPA South teams Maryland, Bucknell, and George Washington. Saturday, April 12, will bring the Bears' first home game, when they host Hartwick at Wheaton. After playing Queens at Connecticut College the following day, Brown will honor its seniors in its final home game, hosting Harvard on March 15.
As always, the season ends with the Northern Division and Eastern Championships, which will be held at Utica and Michigan this year, respectively.
