PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's water polo team (14-6) is set to host the United States National Water Polo team at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, at the Smith Swim Center. The Bears will be the eighth game on Team USA's 13-game Collegiate Tour in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
The US Team has knocked off its first six opponents, starting with a 14-4 win over Hartwick. Since then, they have defeated San Diego State (9-4), Stanford (14-7), Michigan (14-3), Indiana (15-5), and Bucknell (19-2). Team USA plays at Princeton this evening before the Brown match on Wednesday.
In the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, the US Team won the silver medal, and is currently ranked as the No. 1 team in the world. The team includes seven Olympians from the 2000 squad and 13 players from the 2003 World Championship team. The collegiate tour consists of six more games, including those against Princeton and Brown.
Team USA is led by head coach Guy Baker. Baker has led Team USA from the No. 8 ranking in the World in 1998 to the top spot this year. The team includes six players from UCLA, four from Stanford, two from California and one from San Diego State.
Brown enters the exhibition game following a second place finish in the 2004 ECAC Championships, falling to Hartwick, 7-6 in overtime, in the championship game. For more information on USA Water Polo, go to http://www.usawaterpolo.com
