LEWISBURG, PA - The women's water polo team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2004 Eastern Championships, but came up one goal short of advancing to the Championship game, losing to Michigan, 4-3. En route to the semi-final match, the Bears defeated Princeton, 8-3.
Against Princeton, Brown held onto a 4-3 half-time lead and then shut down the Tigers' offence for the final 14:00, while spreading their own offence out between seven different Bears. Freshman Elizabeth Balassone (Los Altos, CA) led the Bears with two goals, while junior Diana Livermore (Menlo Park, CA) and senior Heidi Wendt (Danville, CA) added one goal and three and two drawn ejections, respectively. Seniors Lauren McGeoch (Cupertino, CA), Jeanie Ward-Waller (San Antonio, TX) and Jackie Parente (Los Angeles, CA), and sophomore Allison Biner (Moraga, CA) all added one goal. In net for Brown, senior Keira Heggie (Miami, FL) recorded 12 saves.
Next, against Michigan, Livermore led Brown with all three goals, while Ward-Waller added five steals to lead the Bears. Heggie stopped 10 shots in the loss.
Brown continues action at the Eastern Championships on Sunday, April 25, when it faces the loser of the Hartwick-Indiana game in a third-place match-up at 1:40.
