Utica, NY - Day one of the Northern Division Championship went as expected on Saturday, as the #20 Brown women's water polo team romped to wins over host Utica, 12-4, and Connecticut College, 16-5. The wins brought the Bears' season record to the .500 mark for the first time since the start of the season at 13-13. On Sunday, Brown will take on Harvard in its semifinal match-up, then play either #14 Hartwick or Connecticut College in either the Championship or Third-Place Game.
Against the Pioneers to begin the day, senior Emily Schwartz (Miami Beach, FL) led the Bears with four goals. Senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) chipped in two goals and three steals, and freshman Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA), one of six Bears with one goal, had three assists.
The Bears slipped into cruise control against Utica, scoring five goals in the final three quarters after accumulating a 7-1 lead in the first quarter. However, they had no such problem against Connecticut College, scoring at least three goals in each quarter. Blaxberg and sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) scored three goals apiece, with Glick adding six assists and two steal. Freshman Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) and sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) also had three goals apiece. Freshman Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) had six steals to go with one goal.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) had save percentages above 50 percent in both games, stopping five shots against Utica and stopping six against Connecticut College.
The Bears' showdown with Harvard will be at 10:15 a.m. Sunday morning. The winner of that game will play in the Championship Game at 2:30 p.m., with the loser playing at 1:15 for third place, with a chance at an at-large bid to the Eastern Championships at stake. The top two teams from Northerns will automatically qualify.
