PROVIDENCE, RI - The women's water polo team (15-7), ranked 17th in the nation, took second in the 2003 Northern Championships, falling to #16 Hartwick, 4-3 in overtime.
In day one of competition, the Bears cruised past Marist, defeating the Red Foxes, 21-4. Eleven different Bears scored the goals, while four notched three goals to lead Brown. Junior Jeanie Ward-Waller (San Antonio, TX), sophomore Diana Livermore (Menlo Park, CA), and freshman Allison Biner (Moraga, CA) and Meghan Duffey (Upper Arlington, OH) each scored three goals, while senior Tori Barbata (Kailua, HI) and sophomore Kristin Vollmer (San Antonio, TX) both added two goals. In addition, senior Julie Willams (Berkeley, CA), juniors Lauren McGeoch (Cupertino, CA), Jackie Parente (Los Angeles, CA), and Heidi Wendt (Danville, CA), and freshman Maria DeRiggi (Sacramento, CA) each found the back of the net. Livermore also drew one ejection and added four steals, while Duffey drew one ejection and had three steals. In addition, Ward-Waller, Barbata, Vollmer, and McGeogh each drew one ejection, while Barbata drew one four-meter. In net, junior Keira Heggie (Miami, FL) stopped five shots in one quarter of action, while freshman Katherine Cummings (La Jolla, CA) made eight saves in three quarters.
In their second game of the Championships, the Bears defeated Wagner, 13-4, while advancing to the semi-final game. Livermore led the way with three goals and a season-high seven kick-outs, while Ward-Waller, Parente, and freshman Jamie Relth (Carlsbad, CA) each scored two goals. In addition, Barbata, McGeoch, DeRiggi, and Duffey all chipped in one goal. McGeoch and Ward-Waller both drew two kick-outs, while Relth added one kick-out and five steals. In net, Heggie stopped 12 shots in three quarters of action, while Cummings made seven saves in one quarter.
Brown faced Harvard in the semi-final game, and dominated the Crimson, 14-3, while advancing to the Championship. Livermore, who drew two ejections, and Barbata led the Bears with three goals, while McGeoch and junior Sonia Lamel (LaFayette, CA) added two goals. Relth, who also drew one kick-out, Ward-Waller, who notched two kick-outs, Williams, and Biner all added one goal, while DeRiggie drew one-ejection. In net, Heggie made three saves in the first half, while Cummings made four in the second half.
The Bears then faced Hartwick in the Championship game, a re-match of last weekend's ECAC Semi-Final match, falling to the Hawks, 4-3, in overtime. Parente, Lamel, who added three steals, and senior Melissa Iagulli (Walnut Creek, CA) each scored for Brown. Livermore also drew two ejections, while Barbata drew one kick-out, and Ward-Waller added four steals. In net, Heggie stopped 13 shots for the Bears.
Brown continues action on April 25, competing in the 2003 Eastern Championships, which are will be hosted by Harvard from the 25th-27th.
