La Jolla, CA - It took 16:45 for the 19th-ranked Brown women's water polo team (14-7) to score its first goal, as a late rally was not enough to overcome a 6-0 deficit in an 8-4 loss to #15 UC San Diego on Thursday. Senior Caitlin Fahey (Bellevue, WA) had two of the Bears' four goals, including one with 5:20 remaining that cut the Triton lead to 7-4, and had two steals.
UCSD scored three goals in the first quarter, two in the second and had scored one in the third before Fahey got the Bears on the board 45 seconds into the period. After a Triton goal at 4:43, Brown made a run. Seniors Claire Angyal (Mosman, Australia) and Paige Lansing (Newport Beach, CA) scored before the end of the quarter, and Fahey scored again in the fourth to cut the lead to three. However, the Triton defense held for the final 5:20, and a UCSD goal ended the scoring for the 8-4 final.
Sophomore Rory Stanton (Danville, CA) led the Bears with three ejections drawn. Fahey and freshman Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) had one block each, and freshman goalie Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) had two steals and five blocks.
With its eight-game California swing over, the Bears will turn their attention back to the CWPA Northern Division. They'll open a five-game final stretch of inter-division games at #13 Hartwick on Saturday, April 7. In the teams' last meeting on Feb. 24, the Hawks handed the Bears a 13-7 loss in a game held at Harvard.
