Bakersfield, CA - In the final day of the Roadrunner Invitational at Bakersfield, the Brown women's water polo team split with a 9-1 victory over Whittier and then dropped a 9-7 decision to UC San Diego. These two games complete the team's trip out west, as the squad will now head back east to prepare for a CWPA Northern Division matchup against Hartwick at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3 at Wheaton College.
The Bears dominated on the offensive end against Whittier, as junior Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) lit up for three goals and junior Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) notched one in the first quarter to take a 4-0 lead. The Bears' hard-nosed defense kept Whittier off the scoreboard, as Bruno combined for three more in the second behind two goals from Glick and another by sophomore Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) to take a 7-0 heading into the half.
Freshman Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) tallied the only goal in the third quarter to head into the final eight minutes of play with an 8-0 lead. Whittier finally got on the scoreboard after Sarah Peel snuck one by junior goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI), who ended the game with nine saves.
It was a tough second game for Bruno, as the squad fell 9-7 to UC San Diego. Brown gained the immediate lead, 3-2, behind Glick, Wohlmuth and Presant goals in the first eight minutes. San Diego knocked in two in the first quarter, one from Sydney Gstettenbauer and the other from Audra Bloom.
UC San Diego's defense would then hold the Bears scoreless in the second quarter as they tallied two goals to take a 4-3 lead heading into halftime. Both squads netted three goals in the third quarter (two scored by Glick and one scored by Presant), but the Bears were outscored 2-1 in the fourth as UC San Diego came away with a 9-7 victory. Wohlmuth scored Brown's only goal in the fourth. Laing picked up six saves in net, as San Diego's Markayla Quane recorded 15.
