Bakersfield, CA - Led by a stingy defense and a solid offensive effort, the Brown women's water polo team got back on track after picking up two runs at the Roadrunner Invitational at Bakersfield. The Bears posted a 12-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino, followed by an 11-4 victory against Concordia University.
The Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter against the Coyotes, behind goals by Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) and junior Lauren Presant (Poway, CA). San Bernardino was able to convert two counter attack goals in the second quarter, but Bruno tacked on three more to lead 5-2 at the half. Junior Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) was stellar in the cage during the first three quarters picking up 12 saves. She gave way to rookie Misa Scharfen (Santa Rosa, CA) with a 9-3 lead, who picked up two saves in her eight minutes in the net.
Both squads scored three goals in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring, as Brown picked up the win, 12-6. Freshman Bethany Kwoka (San Mateo, CA), Presant and Wohlmuth led Brown with three goals apiece, followed by junior Stephanie Glick (Bonita, CA) with two and sophomore Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) with one. Glick also added four assists in game one, as sophomore Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) handed out three.
Another strong defensive game by Brown limited Concordia to just seven shots in the first half as the Bears gained an 8-1 lead. The Eagles scored just three goals in the second half as Bruno posted three to earn the win.
Presant led the offense with six goals, followed by another strong performance by Kwoka with three. Bullwinkel and Wohlmuth each added a goal, as Glick handed out six assists. Laing played the first two quarter of the game and picked up two saves, as Scharfen posted one in the second half.
The Bears will now take on Whittier and UC San Diego this afternoon to close out its trip out west, as the squad will then prepare to a home match against Hartwick at Wheaton College on Friday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m.
