Early Lead Dissipates as #19 Bears Fall to #6 UC Irvine, 12-6

March 28, 2007

Providence, RI - A three-goal barrage in a span of 2:28 in the first quarter gave the 19th-ranked Brown women's water polo team (14-6) a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, but the Bears could not hold on, falling to #6 UC Irvine (15-6), 12-6. Senior Paige Lansing (Newport Beach, CA), playing less than 15 minutes from her hometown, had her second consecutive three-goal game, but it was not enough, as Brown's winning streak was snapped at five games.

The Anteaters scored first at 6:59, but Lansing tied it up with her first goal 38 seconds later, just after a six-on-five had ended. Irvine retook the lead on a power-play goal at 3:47, but the Bears surged for the rest of the quarter, tying the game on a six-on-five goal of their own from Lansing at 3:18, then going up 4-2 on goals by sophomore Rory Stanton (Danville, CA) and senior Caitlin Fahey (Bellevue, WA).

However, Irvine owned the final three quarters, retaking a 5-4 lead less than three minutes into the second quarter and outscoring the Bears 10-2 the rest of the way. Lansing scored in the second quarter to tie the game, 5-5, and senior Claire Angyal (Mosman, Australia) scored the final goal of the game.

Junior Ally Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI) led the Bears with three assists. Fahey had two steals and drew two ejections to go with her goal, while senior Elizabeth Balassone (Los Altos, CA) and junior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) each drew three ejections. Freshman Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made seven saves in the cage.

The Bears, who were ranked 19th for the second consecutive week in Wednesday's Top 20 poll, finish their California swing Thursday against #15 UC San Diego. That will be the final non-conference game on Brown's schedule before finishing the regular season with five CWPA Northern Division road games.
