Rohnert Park, CA - The women's water polo team snapped a two game skid with 9-7 and 10-4 wins over Sonoma State and Pacific this afternoon. Sophomore Anne Deggelman was a wall in net stopping eight in the win against Sonoma and six against Pacific.
The Bears came back from three down after the first quarter in the win against Sonoma. Junior Paige Lansing recorded back to back goals cutting the three goal deficit to one with 5:50 remaining in the third. After a quick Sonoma State goal to pad their lead to two goals, junior Elizabeth Balassone brought Brown back to one with 5:14 to go in the third. Lansing tallied her third goal of the game as Brown went on to score four straight goals to gain a 7-5 lead with 0:42 to go in the third. Balassone went on to take on the ninth goal for the final 9-6 score.
In the second game of the day the Bears were led by junior Karlyanna Kopra who tallied three goals including two first quarter goals to give Brown a 2-1 lead after one quarter gone. Sophomore Emily Schwartz put Brown up by two with 5:43 to go in the second on a counter attack for a 3-1 halftime lead.
The Bears came out of the halftime break hot, as they went on to score five goals to put their lead to 8-2 with 0:16 to go in the third. Junior Caitlin Fahey got things started scoring on an outside shot with 6:38 remaining. Kopra, freshman Rory Stanton and Balassone's two goals were scored later that quarter to account for the five goal lead. Freshman Kristin Cuthbertson tacked on the ninth goal with 1:39 remaining in the game.
Defensively Deggelman anchored the defense stopping six while Cuthbertson accounted for three steals in the win.
The Bears will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they wrap up their west coast trip for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with Santa Clara.
