Ann Arbor, MI - The first game of the Wolverine Invitational was not much of a challenge for the Brown women's water polo team (6-2), as the Bears defeated Slippery Rock by an 11-2 count. The Bears built a 9-1 lead at the half, then cruised for the final two quarters.
The scoring was spread evenly among eight players, who all had one or two goals. Seniors Elizabeth Balassone (Los Altos, CA) and Caitlin Fahey (Bellevue, WA) joined freshman Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) with two goals apiece, while seniors Claire Angyal (Mosman, Australia) and Paige Lansing (Newport Beach, CA), junior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL), sophomore Rory Stanton (Danville, CA), and freshman Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) all had one goal. Freshman Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) needed to make just six saves in her first collegiate game in her hometown. Fahey and Glick led the Bears with three and two assists, respectively. Fahey led the effort on the defensive end with three steals, while junior Ally Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI), also an Ann Arbor-area native, Stanton, and Presant had two apiece.
The rest of the tournament should not be so easy for the Bears. On Saturday, Bruno will tangle with #11 Loyola Marymount at 1:30 p.m. and Indiana at 6:10 p.m. The Hoosiers and Bears both received two votes in this week's Top 20 poll, finishing just outside the rankings.
