Cambridge, MA - A brutal early-season schedule that featured six ranked teams in 11 games, the Brown women's water polo team (3-9, 2-1 CWPA North) earned a solid win on the road Thursday night, beating Harvard (6-7, 1-2 CWPA North), 12-4. Up by two goals at halftime, the Bears outscored their hosts 7-1 in the second half to claim sole possession of second place in the CWPA Northern Division.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Crimson scored three of the next five goals for a 5-3 halftime score. However, a five-goal run in the third quarter broke the game open for Brown, and a 2-1 fourth quarter led to a 14-4 final.
Sophomore Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) had her best game of the season, making 11 saves to tie her season high in saves and season low in goals allowed. Sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) led the Bears with four goals, three assists, and three steals, bringing her team-leading totals to 56 points and 18 steals. Senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL) had three goals and a team-high four ejections drawn, also nabbing two steals.
"We put together four great quarters of Brown Water Polo," said Brown Head Coach Felix Mercado. "This was a complete team effort, from Laing in the cage to Blaxberg and Wohlmuth at two-meters drawing ejections."
The Bears will have 13 days before their next game, as they head to the West Coast for their annual California Spring Break trip. They will play Sonoma State, Cal State Monterey Bay, UC Santa Cruz, #10 UC Davis, #2 Stanford, and #4 California over a five-day span beginning Wednesday, March 26.
