Oneonta, NY - In its CWPA Northern Division opener, the Brown women's water polo team (1-8) lost to #18 Hartwick (7-7), 20-8, at Moyer Pool on Friday night. The Bears were close, down 5-3 after one of sophomore Lauren Presant's (Poway, CA) three goals with 5:18 remaining in the second period, but the Hawks scored the next seven goals to take a commanding lead and never looked back.
Presant and fellow sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) tied for the team lead with three goals apiece, with freshmen Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) and Margeaux Berroth (Rhododendron, CA) adding one each. Sophomore Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made seven saves in the cage. The key for the game may have been power plays, as the Hawks capitalized on eight of their nine chances, while the Bears scored on just four of their 13 man-up opportunities.
"We had some mental breakdowns and before we knew it, this game got away from us," said Brown Head Coach Felix Mercado. "We had some good moments early, but at the end of the day, we have to put away our power plays."
For Hartwick, Megan Dahl-Smith and Kirsten Hudson had game highs with five goals each. Goalkeeper Jessica Dorman made 16 saves, including seven in the third period.
The Bears will play three games at Hartwick on Saturday, including an exhibition against the New York Athletic Club, a CWPA North game against Utica College, and a non-conference tilt with Marist.
