Poughkeepsie, NY - The Brown women's water polo team advanced to the ECAC Championship game after victories against Siena and Wagner on Saturday afternoon. The Bears defeated the Saints, 8-6, and then followed it up with a thrilling 9-6 win over the Seahawks in the ECAC semi-final game.
Against Siena, Brown notched six goals in the first 16 minutes of play to take a 6-3 lead heading into halftime. Senior Rory Stanton (Danville, CA) led the team with three goals, followed by junior Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) with two. The Saints then tallied two goals in the third and another in the fourth to just two Brown goals, but Brown came out on top with an 8-6 victory. Also scoring for Bruno was sophomore Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA), sophomore Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) and freshman Bethany Kwoka (San Mateo, CA) each added one.
Junior goal keeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) tallied five saves in game one, and another five in game two.
Brown's defense was again stellar in game two against the Seahawks, limiting Wagner to just 12 shots during the game. Wagner went ahead 1-0 after the first eight minutes of play, but Brown lit up for six goals in the second quarter to go ahead 6-3 at the half.
"Offensively we didn't play well today," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "I felt Stephanie (Laing) and the perimeter defense was stellar and helped us overcome sloppy play on the offensive end."
Junior Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) led the offense with three goals, followed by Presant with two goals. Both Wagner and Brown notched two goals in the third quarter and another in the fourth, but it was Brown's stellar second quarter performance that put them over the edge for a 9-6 victory over the Saints.
The Bears will now play the No. 1 seed, Marist, this afternoon in the championships game at 1:00 p.m.
