The women's water polo team opened the 2003 season with two tough losses to top teams, Princeton and Indiana, and a victory over George Washington at the 2003 Princeton Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, February 15th and 16th. The Bears were also scheduled to play Bucknell, but the game was cancelled due to the winter storm which hit New Jersey on Sunday.
In their first match, against Princeton, Brown dropped a close 6-5 decision to the Tigers. The Bears held onto a lead at the half, but Princeton closed the gap during the second half and netted the go-ahead goal with just 25 seconds left in the game. Junior Sonia Lamel (LaFayette, CA) led the Bears with two goals, while freshman Allison Biner (Moraga, CA), junior Jackie Parente (Los Angeles, CA), and sophomore Diana Livermore (Menlo Atherton, CA) each chipped in one. Senior Tori Barbata (Kailua, HI) drew two kick-outs, while Livermore and Lamel each drew one. In net, junior Keira Heggie (Miami, FL) made 11 saves.
In their next game of the day, the Bears took an early 2-0 lead over Indiana, but fell 5-3. Lamel, senior Melissa Iagulli (Walnut Creek, CA), and junior Jeanie Ward-Waller (San Antonio, TX) each scored one goal, while Livermore drew three kick-outs, and Ward-Waller and Iagulli each drew one. Heggie stopped eight shots in net.
In Brown's final contest of the Invitational, the Bears defeated George Washington, 11-1. Lamel, Biner, and Livermore led the way with two goals each, while Iagulli, Barbata, Ward-Waller, senior Julie Williams (Berkeley, CA), and freshman Maria DeRiggi (Sacramento, CA) each scored one. Heggie made three saves in the first half, while freshman Katherine Cummings (La Jolla, CA) made her collegiate debut for the Bears, stopping four shots in the second half.
Brown continues action this weekend when it hosts the Brown Invitational at the Smith Swim Center, February 22-23.
