Bears Open Season With Losses to Two Ranked Teams at Triton Invite

Feb. 10, 2008

La Jolla, CA - The Brown women's water polo team opened its season on Saturday at the Triton Invitational held by UC San Diego, dropping a pair of games to #9 UC Irvine, 1-9, and #20 Cal State Bakersfield, 9-6. As would be expected, the Bears made some mistakes in their first weekend of play, but Head Coach Felix Mercado was pleased with his team's performance.

"While we did not win the games, I saw some great things from this team," Mercado said. "We had some great moments that I hope to maintain and we made some mistakes that we will correct. Overall, not bad for their first games of the season."

The tournament features a loaded field that includes 11 ranked teams among the 16 competing squads, and Brown had to open with one of the best in the Anteaters. Sophomore Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) led the Bears with three goals in the contest, as Brown took a 2-1 lead before Irvine pulled away with an 8-0 run that extended into the second quarter. Up 13-4 at the half and 17-6 after three quarters, the Anteaters cruised the rest of the way, as sloppy play by the Bears led to many fast breaks by their opponents.

Sophomore Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA) added a pair of goals, while senior Alexis Blaxberg (Pinecrest, FL), junior Rory Stanton (Danville, CA), and freshmen Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) and Katherine Stanton (Danlle, CA) all added one goal. Sophomore Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) made three saves in goal.

That loss set up a second-round game between the Bears and the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, who are coached by former Brown coach Jason Gall. Things got off to a poor start for Brown, as Bakersfield took a 3-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. The Bears got as close as 6-4, but eventually fell, 9-6. Senior Emily Schwartz (Miami Beach, FL) led the team with two goals, while Blaxberg, Glick, Presant, and freshman Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) added one apiece. Laing made seven saves in the cage.

On Sunday, the Bears will take on California Baptist at 9:15 a.m. Pacific Time, then play one more game at the Triton Invitational at 1:00 or 2:15 p.m.
