PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 25 Brown University women's water polo defeated McKendree University, 13-5, and fell to California Baptist University, 9-7, in its season-opening doubleheader at the Bruno Classic on Friday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
On opening day, the Bears (1-1) outscored the Bearcats (0-4) 6-0 in the fourth quarter in their second game of the day after pulling within one goal twice in the fourth quarter prior to falling to the Lancers (2-4) in their season debut.
Sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) scored five goals on the day – all against McKendree – while juniors McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) and Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) each scored three goals between the two games.
Next, Brown continues play at the Bruno Classic on Saturday against Iona (9:10 a.m.) and No. 24 Marist (5:20 p.m.) prior to match-ups on Sunday vs. Villanova (8:30 a.m.) and No. 13 San Diego State (1:30 p.m.).
Game 1 – Cal Baptist 9, No. 25 Brown 7
Senior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made nine saves, but No. 25 Brown fell to Cal Baptist, 9-7, in its season opener on Friday evening.
The Bears tied the game at 5-5 in the third quarter with a 3-0 run and pulled within one goal twice in the fourth quarter before dropping the decision.
Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) posted a goal and four ejections drawn while freshmen Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.), Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.), and Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) netted one goal apiece.
After CBU opened the game's scoring, Perez tied the game at 1-1 before the Lancers went ahead 3-1. A goal from McDougal brought Brown within 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lancers scored the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 5-2 edge before Miller converted a goal to make the score 5-3 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Cook and Hughes completed a 3-0 run for the Bears as Brown knotted the score at 5-5 with 3:34 remaining in the stanza. CBU scored the last goal of the third and the first marker of the fourth quarter to gain a 7-5 edge with 5:25 to play.
An answer from Rosas sliced the deficit to 7-6 with 5:02 to go. Following a CBU goal, Miller trimmed the margin to 8-7 with 3:20 to play before the visitors charted the game's final tally with 2:05 left.

Game 2 – No. 25 Brown 13, McKendree 5
Sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) scored five goals, including three in the fourth quarter, to propel No. 25 Brown to a 13-5 win over McKendree on Friday night in its second game of the day.
Leading 7-5 entering the fourth quarter, the Bears outscored the visiting Bearcats, 6-0, in the final frame en route to the victory.
Freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) and junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) each scored two goals. Senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched a goal and three ejections drawn, and junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) compiled a goal and two steals.
Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) and freshman Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) chipped in one goal apiece. Freshman Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) totaled two assists and five steals while fellow freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) added two assists and two steals.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made four saves.
Goals from Miller and Cook gave Brown a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, and Atwell made the score 3-1 at the 4:33 mark of the second quarter. After McKendree scored consecutive goals to draw level at 3-3, McDougal netted back-to-back goals to push Brown ahead 5-3 at the intermission.
Atwell converted early in the third quarter to give Brown a 6-3 lead, and a goal from Hughes kept the edge at 7-4. The Bears remained ahead 7-5 heading to the fourth quarter.
Brown closed the game on a 6-0 run in the fourth frame behind three goals from Atwell. Heilman started the scoring before Atwell netted back-to-back goals. Rosas, Cook, and Atwell concluded the scoring in order.
