CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Six different Bears scored goals, including two tallies from sophomore Carmen Rosas, but Brown University women's water polo fell at No. 20 Harvard University, 8-7, in a CWPA game on Wednesday night at Blodgett Pool.
In their second game against an Ivy League opponent this season, the Bears (18-6, 2-3 CWPA) tied the game in the third quarter and pulled within one goal three times in the fourth frame, but the host Crimson (13-10, 3-2 CWPA) held on for the win.
Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) added a steal and two drawn ejections while sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) posted a goal, two assists, and a field block. Classmate Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) totaled a goal, an assist, and three drawn ejections.
Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) notched a goal and two steals, sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) registered a goal, a field block, and three drawn ejections, freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) netted a goal, and senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) dished out two assists.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made seven saves and two steals while limiting the Crimson to three goals in the first half.
Brown opened the contest with a 1-0 lead just 79 seconds into the game behind a goal from Rosas. The Bears allowed only one goal in the opening stanza as the two teams stood tied 1-1 after one.
After Harvard pulled ahead 3-1 with 3:44 to go in the second quarter, the Bears scored the period's final two goals as Kolokotronis and McDougal converted at the 2:52 and 0:14 marks respectively to knot the score at 3-3 at halftime.
Both teams' defenses proved effective for much of the third quarter before the Crimson scored with 2:16 left in the frame. Rosas tied the game at 4-4 with a goal with 33 seconds to play in the third, but a Crimson goal with 13 seconds left in the quarter gave the visitors a 5-4 edge heading to the fourth.
A goal from Atwell pulled Brown within 6-5 with 7:07 remaining, a goal from Woo cut the deficit to 7-6 with 4:54 to play, and Miller brought the Bears within 8-7 with 56 seconds left, but the Crimson did not allow an equalizing goal in the final frame.
Next, Brown concludes the regular season, hosting Indiana on Friday, Apr. 14 at 3:30 p.m., Hartwick on Saturday, Apr. 15 at 10:30 a.m., and St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in a trio of CWPA games.
