Women’s Water Polo Tops Occidental, Redlands to Open West Coast Swing

REDLANDS, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo started its seven-day, nine-game road trip through the state of California with a 12-5 win over Occidental College and an 11-2 victory over the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon at Redlands' Thompson Aquatics Center.

The Bears (10-1) topped the Tigers (5-15), ranked No. 8 in Division III, in their first game of the day before beating the host Bulldogs (6-16), the No. 7 ranked team in Division III, in their nightcap.

Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with six goals on the day while freshman goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) totaled 19 saves between the two games.

Next, Brown continues its spring break road trip tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 26, with games at Pomona-Pitzer at 2:00 p.m. ET and at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Game 1 – Brown 12, Occidental 5

Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored a game-high four goals, and the Bears' defense held the Tigers without a goal until 5:15 remained in the game as Brown defeated Occidental, 12-5, in its first game of the day at Redlands on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears outscored the Tigers 12-0 over the game's first 26:45 before Occidental netted the game's final five goals in the last 5:15.

Heilman's four goals paced the Bears while senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) registered three goals. Sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) totaled a goal, an assist, and two steals while freshman Hannah Eliot (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted a goal and assist.

Sophomores Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) each logged a goal and two steals, freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) scored once, and senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) chipped in an assist and two steals.

In the cage, freshman goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 12 saves.

Heilman and Crowley provided all six of the Bears' goals in the first half. The duo each scored once as Brown went ahead 2-0 after the first quarter. The pair netted two goals apiece in the second stanza to give Brown a 6-0 halftime lead.

Heilman, McDougal, Miller, and Atwell scored in order in the third quarter as the Bears moved ahead 10-0 through three quarters. Woo and Eliot netted the first two goals of the fourth quarter to extend Brown's advantage to 12-0 with under six minutes to play before the Tigers notched the game's last five goals.

Game 2 – Brown 11, Redlands 2

Four different Bears scored two goals apiece as Brown bested Redlands, 11-2, in its second game of the day on Saturday evening.

The Bears held a 9-1 halftime edge against the host Bulldogs and did not allow a goal in either the second or third quarters.

Heilman totaled two goals, two assists, and four steals while Kolokotronis landed two goals and three steals. McDougal and sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) each netted two goals.

Woo posted a goal and two assists, Miller tacked on a goal and two field blocks, and Crowley added a single goal.

Burns turned aside seven shots for the Bears in goal.

McDougal scored two of the Bears' first three goals alongside a Kolokotronis marker as Brown went up 3-0. After a Redlands goal, Miller gave Brown a 4-1 lead at the end of one.

The Bears scored all five of the second quarter's goals with Heilman scoring twice, including once on a 5-meter penalty shot, in addition to goals from Kolokotronis, Woo, and Rosas.

Crowley netted the Bears' lone goal in the third quarter, and Rosas added the visitors' only tally in the fourth quarter after a Bulldogs marker.
