Women’s Water Polo Posts Fifth-Best GPA in Nation, Receives ACWPC Honors
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second year in a row, the Brown women’s water polo team posted the fifth-best team grade point average in the nation, turning in a 3.41 to receive honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). In addition, 15 players were named ACWPC All-Academic for maintaining a GPA of 3.20 or higher.

Dakan Leads Water Polo Club Team to Junior Olympics Gold, Earns MVP Honors
STANFORD, Calif. – Brown women’s water polo incoming freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) was dubbed the 2014 Junior Olympics Session 2 Most Valuable Player for the 18 Girls group after leading the Rose Bowl club team to first place in the Platinum division at Stanford University last week.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the third time in her career, Brown women’s water polo senior Kate Woods (La Jolla, Calif.) was named an Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Honorable Mention All-American, it was announced by the association office on Monday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women’s water polo Head Coach Felix Mercado announced on Tuesday that incoming freshmen Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) and Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) will join the Bears for the upcoming 2015 season.

Women’s Water Polo Nipped by Michigan’s Overtime Rally, 11-9, in CWPA Championship Opening Round
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Brown junior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) tallied a hat trick but Michigan’s Ali Thomason (So., San Rafael, Calif./Marin Catholic) scored four times, including twice in overtime, and won five-of-six sprints to earn Player of the Game honors and account for the difference as No. 20 University of Michigan survived a scare against Brown University to record an 11-9 OT win in the opening round of the 2014 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.

Mercado Named CWPA Southern Division Coach of the Year, Woods and McNamara Earn All-Division
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – For the second time in three years, Brown women’s water polo Head Coach Felix Mercado has been named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Coach of the Year, it was announced by the league office on Thursday. Joining their coach on the list of honorees, seniors Kate Woods (La Jolla, Calif.) and Emily McNamara (Winters, Calif.) played their way onto the Southern Division First Team and Second Team, respectively.

Woods was an integral part of the Bears’ run to the CWPA Southern Division title game this past weekend.

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – In the wake of a runner-up finish at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Championship, the Brown women’s water polo team received the fifth seed for the CWPA Championship set for Apr. 25-27 at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium. The Bears will open up against fourth-seeded Michigan on Friday, April 25 at 12 p.m.

Women’s Water Polo Bested by No. 9 Princeton in CWPA Southern Division Title Game, 11-4
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the third year in a row, the Brown women’s water polo team made a run at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Championship and took second place, falling to top-seeded Princeton, this season by a score of 11-4 at Blodgett Pool on Sunday. The Bears, now 18-15 overall, will await their seed for the CWPA Eastern Championships.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The third-seeded Brown women’s water polo team defeated sixth-seeded Mercyhurst, 14-5, and second-seeded Bucknell, 12-9, at Blodgett Pool on Saturday to advance to tomorrow’s Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Championship Game. For the third year in a row, the Bears will take on top-seeded No. 9 Princeton in the finals at 1 p.m.

Crowley was also dubbed Co-Rookie and Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 4.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Brittany Westerman (Palo Alto, Calif.) fired in four goals and classmate Emily McNamara (Winters, Calif.) tossed in a hat trick to lift Brown women’s water polo to a 14-9 victory over Connecticut College in the Bears’ regular season finale at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Wednesday. Brown enters postseason play with a 16-14 overall record and has secured the third seed in this weekend’s Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Championships.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – A pair of last minute goals fueled a Bears rally that fell just short as the Brown women’s water polo team suffered a 7-6 setback to Bucknell in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division action at Kinney Natatorium on Sunday. The Bears slip to 15-14 overall and complete CWPA South regular season play with a 3-2 mark.

The Bears move to 15-13 overall and 3-1 in the CWPA South heading into their final day of CWPA regular season action.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A trio of Bears registered three goals each as the Brown women’s water polo team fell to No. 20 San Diego State, 10-5, before rebounding for a 13-5 win over Fresno Pacific at the Aztec Aquaplex on Saturday. The Bears move to 13-12 overall and finish their 12-game California swing with an 8-4 record.

WHITTIER, Calif. – Senior Emily McNamara (Winters, Calif.) notched one of her team-best three goals with 12 seconds left in the first overtime to lift the Brown women’s water polo team to a 9-8 victory over Whittier at Slades Aquatic Center on Thursday. In their second overtime decision in three games, the Bears improve to 12-11 overall and become winners of eight of their last 11 contests.

Women’s Water Polo Falls to Cal Baptist in OT, Defeats Concordia in Tight Contests
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Senior Kate Woods (La Jolla, Calif.) rattled off eight goals over two games as the Brown women’s water polo team dropped a double overtime heartbreaker to Cal Baptist, 10-9, before topping Concordia University Irvine, 10-8, at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Wednesday. With the split, the Bears move to 11-11 on the season.

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior Kate Woods (La Jolla, Calif.) bumped her one-day total to six goals with another hat trick and sophomore Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) added three goals to lift the Brown women’s water polo team to a 12-9 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday. The Bears, now winners of five of their seven games in California, improve to 10-10 on the season and the Athenas drop to 9-11.

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Junior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) tossed in the go-ahead goal with 4:48 to play to cap a three-goal night and senior Kate Woods (La Jolla, Calif.) also recorded a hat trick as the Brown women’s water polo team edged Pomona-Pitzer, 11-10, at Haldeman Pool on Tuesday. Brown improves to 9-11 with the victory.

IRVINE, Calif. – Senior Kate Woods (La Jolla, Calif.) scored twice to lead a crew of six Bears who found the back of the net but the Brown women’s water polo team dropped a 17-7 decision against No. 6 UC Irvine at the Anteater Aquatics Complex on Sunday. Brown now stands at 8-10 on the season, while the Anteaters improve to 16-6 overall.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Senior goalie Sarah Shin (Fullerton, Calif.) buckled down for 11 saves and three Bears scored twice as the Brown women’s water polo team ran its win streak to four games with a 10-7 win over Sonoma State, but No. 9 Loyola Marymount handed Brown a 14-6 loss in game two at the LMU ZUMO Invitational on Saturday. The Bears move to 8-9 overall with the split.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Junior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) scored five times and led a crew of six Bears with multiple goals as the Brown women’s water polo team topped Cal State San Bernardino, 11-5, and Whittier, 9-5, on the first day of the Loyola Marymount University ZUMO Invitational on Friday. The Bears extend their winning streak to three games and improve to 7-8 on the season.

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) erupted for five goals to power the Brown women’s water polo team to a 15-12 victory over Connecticut College at the Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium on Wednesday. Brown snaps a four-game losing streak and improves to 4-8 overall, while the Camels, the defending Division III Champions and top-ranked team in the latest CWPA DIII Poll, fall to 0-1.

Seven teams will descend on the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center this weekend, pitting the Bears against at least three nationally ranked opponents based on the Week 1/January 22 Poll.

Felix Mercado, the head coach of the Brown women’s water polo team, has announced the three members of the Class of 2017 who will be joining the Bears in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in the fall of 2013. The group includes two attackers and a center defender, and the student-athletes all hail from the state of California.
