PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown women's water polo team (15-18, 5-2 CWPA Southern) produced a dominant performance on the first day of the 2013 CWPA Southern Division Championships. The Bears, competing in their home pool, defeated the Mercyhurst Lakers, 12-7, in the first game of the day before beating the Harvard Crimson, 16-12, for the second time this season. The undefeated day snapped a five-game loosing streak for Brown, and earned the team a berth in the CWPA Southern Division Championship game.

In the first game of the Championships, Brown jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Mercyhurst in the first quarter, as sophomore Madison Pepper (Baytown, TX) scored two early goals to spark the Bears' offense. The Lakers fought back into the game, scoring three goals in the second to narrow Brown's lead to one as the teams headed into halftime. Junior Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) scored the first goal of the third to put the Bears ahead by two and the squad never looked back, owning the fourth quarter to finish off the 12-7 win.
Woods lead the Brown offense with five goals, while Pepper and junior Sarah Presant (Poway, CA) each netted two goals of their own. Junior Malaika Drebin (Palo Alto, CA) also contributed to the victory, scoring her goal late in the third quarter. Defensively, the Bears were lead by Pepper and Woods who had five and six steals, respectively.

In Brown's second game of the day, the Bears came out firing early in the first quarter, as Pepper scored three goals in the first three minutes of competition to get the squad rolling. The home team finished the first stanza with a 6-4 lead over the visitors. Harvard came back in the second quarter, outscoring Brown, but the Bears never gave up the lead. The teams spent the third quarter exchanging goals, with Brown hovering just a few goals ahead of Harvard. Presant led the Bears in the stanza, notching two goals and one assist to help them end the third with a 13-12 lead. After a great offensive showing in the first three quarters, it was the Brown defense that sealed the 16-12 win, as the Bears held the Crimson scoreless in the fourth.
Pepper led Brown in its second game of the day, scoring five goals, adding four assists and grabbing four steals. Presant also had a strong contest, scoring four goals of her own with two assists and two steals. Woods added three goals, while junior Emily McNamara (Winters, CA) and sophomore Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, CA) each had two goals and one steal. Junior Sarah Shin (Fullerton, CA) helped Brown seal the win with seven saves, one assist and three steals in the cage.
Brown returns to the pool on Sunday afternoon to play #12 Princeton in the Divisional Championship Game. Action is set to begin at 12:00pm.
