Brown Defeats La Verne, 6-5, and Claremont-M-S, 9-8, After Falling to Cal Baptist, 13-9
CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA – The Brown women's water polo team (11-11, 2-2 CWPA) continued its successful West Coast trip on Tuesday night, winning tight games against La Verne (9-15) and Claremont-M-S (7-13) after falling to Cal Baptist (15-16). The wins lifted the Bears to an 11-11 overall record, while boosting their spring break tally to 5-3.

In the Bears' first game of the day, a 13-9 loss to Cal Baptist, they fell behind quickly in the first quarter and were unable to overcome a 5-1 deficit at the end of the first stanza, despite out scoring the Lancers in the second. Brown was able to whittle Cal Baptist's advantage to two at the half, but the home team kept the Bears at bay, remaining just out of reach and clinching the 13-9 win. Sophomore Madison Pepper was the Bears' leading scorer, finding the back of the net on four different occasions. Senior Katharine Booher (Palo Alto, CA) added two goals in addition to three steals. Juniors Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) and Emily McNamara (Winter, CA) also contributed offensively, with Woods scoring twice and McNamara netting one goal. Junior Sarah Shin (Fullerton, CA) started in goal for the Bears, making three saves over the course of the contest.

Brown was able to rebound from its morning loss by winning a defensive battle with La Verne in the team's second contest of the day, triumphing by a score of 6-5. Down by one after the first quarter, Shin was able to hold the Leopards scoreless in the second and third quarters to overcome the 3-2 deficit and earn a one-goal lead going into the last quarter. That advantage would ultimately prove to be the difference, as both teams scored twice in the final stanza, and the Bears walked away with a 6-5 victory over La Verne. Woods scored three times in the contest and also collected two steals. Booher had two goals for a second consecutive game and McNamara added one. Shin made five saves and was also able to gather two steals between the pipes.

After splitting the first two games of the day, Brown found itself down 6-2 at the half in the team's third game against the host team Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Bears were able to battle back however, tying the game at eight, and Pepper put the game-winner away with nine seconds left on the clock. The Athenas fought down to the wire, but the Bears were able to hold off a last second shot to secure the 9-8 win. Pepper was solid on both the offensive and defensive sides of the game, finishing with two goals, two steals and two ejections drawn. Junior Sarah Presant (Poway, CA) and Woods each had two goals, while Booher had four steals to go along with her one goal. Shin started her third game of the day in the cage and had two saves in two quarters. Senior Claudia Ruiz (Sacramento, CA) played the last half of the game and had three saves, two of which she made in the final two minutes of the game.
After playing a marathon day of games, the Bears will take two days off before returning to the pool for a pair of games on Friday, March 29th. Both will be played at Cal State Bakersfield, as Brown takes on Fresno Pacific at 1:00pm PST before competing against the host team at 5:00pm PST.
