Brown Falls to #9 Long Beach State and #6 San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – On the final day of the San Diego State Tournament, the Brown women's water polo team (7-10, 2-2 CWPA) dropped two games to ranked opponents, falling to #9 Long Beach State (21-4), 10-2, before being defeated by #6 San Diego State (18-7), 11-5.

In their first game of the day against the ninth-ranked Long Beach State 49ers, the Bears were unable to overcome a sluggish offensive game, scoring just two goals in the contest. While the defense held its own for three quarters, keeping Long Beach to just two goals per stanza, Brown was unable to find a way past the 49ers defense, missing 15 shots. Junior Sarah Shin (Fullerton, CA) had a solid outing between the pipes for the Bears, making six saves, and junior Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) was also active on the defensive side with four steals.  Sophomore Madison Pepper (Baytown, TX) had both of Brown's goals and also drew three ejections, while senior Katharine Booher (Palo Alto, CA) chipped in with four steals.

Brown found itself trailing the sixth-ranked Aztecs of San Diego State after eight minutes of play in the team's second game of the day, but the Bears came roaring back, outscoring the Aztecs, 4-2, in the second quarter to trail by one at the half. The home team rebounded in the second half however, scoring three goals in each of the last two quarters to earn the 11-5 win over the visitors.  Junior Sarah Presant (Poway, CA) paced the offense in the second quarter, scoring two goals, while sophomore Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, CA) and Pepper chipped in one goal each. Defensively, Shin was solid in net for a second game, making a season-high eight saves while also contributing two steals.  Both Woods and Booher had six steals, while Presant added three of her own.

The Bears will take Sunday off before heading to Pomona, California to play two games on Monday, March 25th. Brown will begin the day with a 4:00 pm PST contest against Azusa Pacific before taking on Pomona-Pitzer at 7:00pm PST.
