No. 10 Michigan Tops Brown, 10-7, in Eastern Championship Third Place Game; Madison Pepper Named Rookie of the Tournament
Providence, RI- Michigan's Kiki Golden netted five goals, including a hat-trick in the third period, to lead the Wolverines to a 10-7 victory over the Brown women's water polo team (21-17) in the CWPA Eastern Championship Third Place game. Freshman Madison Pepper was named the Rookie of the Tournament and First Team All-East honors, and Kate Woods earned Second Team All-East honors.
The Bears got off to a slow start as Michigan gained a 3-1 advantage in the first eight minutes of play. Brown came back in the second shutting out Michigan, 3-0, following two goals by Emily McNamara and one by Madison Pepper to take a 4-3 lead at the half.
With 6:58 remaining on the clock, freshman Rebecca Zak put one past Morgan Turner in goal to give Brown a 5-3 advantage. Michigan, however, came back with vengeance and gained a 6-5 lead when Golden recorded her hat-trick. Brown retied the game with 2:11 in the period as McNamara scored her third goal of the game, but the Wolverines dominated the fourth period with a four-to-one scoring advantage in the final eight minutes to take the 10-7 victory.
McNamara led Brown's offense with three goals, while Pepper, Zak, Presant and Woods each contributed one. In the net, Evan Cranston recorded four saves for the Bears.
