San Diego, CA- The Brown University women's water polo team defeated Azusa Pacific, 15-4, but lost 7-6 to UC San Diego at the UC San Diego Invitational. Sophomore Kate Woods led Brown in scoring with seven goals, followed by Sarah Presant with four.
The Bears shut out Azusa Pacific in the first two quarters to gain a 9-0 lead at the half. The Bears continued to roll in the final two quarters, edging Azusa 5-3 in the third and was even in scoring in the fourth, 1-1, to earn the 15-4 win.
Woods led the attack with five goals, followed by Presant, Liz Rosen and Madison Pepper with three each. Also scoring was Emily McNamara with one, as rookie Evan Cranston picked up 13 saves in goal to lead the defense.
UC San Diego gained a 4-1 lead in the first eight minutes, but the Bears cut their deficit to two after outscoring their opponent 3-2 in the second. Both squads were scoreless in the third quarter as Brown edged UC San Diego 2-1 in the final quarter to fall by just one goal, 7-6.
Woods and McNamara tallied two goals each, while Brittany Westerman and Presant netted one. Cranston blocked 11 shots for the Bears in net.
The Bears are ending their west coast trip today when they take on Fresno Pacific at 10 a.m. PT.
